Rugby League in Glasgow
As Rugby League in Scotland continues to develop, Glasgow is leading the way, boasting two strong Service Areas – Glasgow and East Glasgow. With fives thriving clubs across the city and three on the, young people throughout Glasgow are being offered exciting and challenging development pathways at very turn! Currently both Service Areas run four competitive performance squads for talented U12, U13, U14 and U15 players. These squads are selected from club players and compete against other Service Areas all over Great Britain. Opportunities also exist for the best Service Area players to represent Scotland as a region, a combined regions squad, and if lucky enough, be selected in the Great Britain All Stars youth squads. Above this U16 and U18 players have opportunities to represent Scotland Rugby League on a national pathway, and gain international honours, before making the leap to open age rugby. In April 2007, the U18 National Squad compete in the U18 Home Nation Championships against England Wales and Ireland, being held in Largs. Further to this, the U16 National squad travel to Serbia to take part in the U16 European Championships in July. Both these squads will contain a large number of players resident in Glasgow and playing for Glasgow Clubs. All the Junior Clubs work closely with Community Clubs and Schools in their local area to develop Rugby League in the Community and create pathways for young people in all areas of their lives through School to Club links. Currently, Rugby League Academies are being set up in a number of secondary schools in social inclusion areas of Glasgow to improve and develop the current players and bring new players into the game.
